Maxine Heueisen 75th

Maxine Heueisen, of Great Bend, will celebrate her 75th birthday on April 26 with a family dinner. She was born April 23, 1933, to Earl and Jesse Carr of Larned. On Nov. 26, 1955, she married Charles Heueisen. He died April 17, 1979.

She has three children, Debra Hamlin and husband Greg of Wichita, Donna Zimmerman and husband Ray of Great Bend and Dean Heueisen and wife Jackie of Blue Springs, Mo.; and seven grandchildren, Jason, Justin and Joel Hamlin of Wichita, Sara Zimmerman of Wichita, Cory Zimmerman of Manhattan, Rachel and Gage Heueisen of Blue Springs.

Maxine Murray 95th

Maxine Murray of Larned, celebrated her 95th birthday with a large family gathering at the Methodist Church in Trousdale.

Born April 19, 1913, on a farmstead near Gentry, Ark., she was the daughter of Ples and Amanda Givens The family moved to Seward when she was 2 years old. She married C. Kenneth Murray in Rozel on May 13, 1933. He died on Jan. 1, 1979. She is a homemaker.

Her children and their spouses are: Barbara and Simon Root of Lyons, Beverly Cornelison of Larned, Bonnie and Clinton Russell of Trousdale, Betty Gardner of Hoisington and the late Gary Murray; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

Lloyd G. Lewis 90th

Lloyd G. Lewis of Larned will celebrate his 90th birthday on April 27. He was born in Jamestown to Minnie and George Lewis on April 27, 1918. He graduated from Jamestown High School.

He served in both Europe and the Pacific during World War II in the Army. After the war, he worked for the Curtis Candy Company and, for many years at A.A. Doerrs in Larned. A member of the American Legion for many years, he enjoys fishing, gardening, playing pool and watching sports. He is a great University of Kansas basketball fan.

He married Naomi Bedwell on July 21, 1939, at Bisbee Ariz. She died in March 2001. He has two surviving sons, Gerald (Gerry) and wife Jewell of Larned and Steven of Roeland Park. His son Richard died in February 2003. Richard’s wife Karen lives in Larned. He has two grandchildren, Carla Batten of Larned and Dana McGovern of St. Louis, Mo.

Luella Mericle 80th

Luella (Truex) Mericle will celebrate her 80th birthday on April 19. Born April 19, 1928, in Great Bend to Adelbert and Ida Marie Truex, she grew up with two sisters, Virginia and Alberta. She graduated from Great Bend High School. Her father was a police officer in Great Bend.

She married Carl Mericle. He died Nov. 9, 1995. A resident of Moravia, Iowa, she was a housewife. She has five children, Russell, Mark, Carla, Curtis, and Daniel; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A son, Mark, is deceased.

Zorn twins 80th

Elmer Zorn of Hoisington and Alvin Zorn of Smith Center will celebrate their 80th birthday with card showers. The twins were born on April 19, 1928, to Fred and Anna Zorn in the Odin area. They both served in the Army in Korea.

Elmer worked for the Barton County Highway Department for 37 years. He married Emily Podlena on Oct. 7, 1952, in Wilson. Viola Wagner of Otis will celebrate her 80th birthday on April 10 with a family gathering in Great Bend. She was born April 10, 1928, to Solomon and Lydia Wegele. He spends his days on the golf course with his friends or in his wood shop making sawdust.

Mary Ann Wondra 70th

The daughter of Anton F. (Tony) and Louise (Maneth) Huslig, she was born on March 12, 1938, near Fowler. She married Arthur A. Wondra on Nov. 14, 1959, in Cunningham. They moved to Great Bend in 1959 and have resided here since then. A graduate of the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, Class of 1959, she is a registered nurse and has worked at Central Kansas Medical Center, Cherry Village Nursing Center and Barton County Home Health and Hospice, retiring in 2000. She is a member of Prince of Peace Parish, St. Rose Church, the Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.

Mrs. Wondra has five children, Kevin and Teresa Wondra of Great Bend, Kathy and Eric Walsten of Mulvane, Alan and Karen Wondra of Wichita, Korey and Leann Wondra of Hutchinson and David and Valerie Wondra of Derby. Peacock 85th

Connie Peacock celebrated her 85th birthday on Feb. 21. She was born on Feb. 21, 1923, in WaKeeney. She married Thomas Peacock in 1941. They moved to Great Bend in 1945, where she has resided for the past 63 years.

She worked alongside Tom at the old Standard Station on 10th and Main and then the Conoco Station at 10th and Grant until she opened Connie’s Yarn Center in 1972. She operated her shop, conducting classes and selling knitting machines and quality yarn, closing the shop in 1995 when Tom passed away. She continues to enjoy knitting and other hand work and meeting with her “knitting” group.

She was a Rebekah Lodge member, and a member of Bissell Point Extension Homemakers Unit until it disbanded. She continues to be active in Pilot Club and is a member of the Presbyterian Church.

She has four children, Claudia Bibber of Carmel Valley, Calif.; Robert Peacock of Midland, Utah; Sheldon Peacock and wife Kristie of Great Bend; and the late David Peacock and wife, Cathy, who lives in Fayetteville, Ark.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Luella Schwager 85th

Luella Schwager celebrated her 85th birthday in the Cardiac Care Unit at Wesley Hospital in Wichita on Dec. 29. All eight of her children, spouses and several of her grandchildren were present to help celebrate this special day.

She was born on Dec. 29, 1922, Luella Pauline Burhenn, to Paul and Bertha (Langrehr) Burhenn at a farm south of Ellinwood in Stafford County. She graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1940 and married George J. Schwager on Nov. 7, 1940, at the St. Rose of Lima Rectory. He died on May 25, 2002. She has eight children; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; and six great-great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. One grandson, Jerry Emerson, passed away in 1993.

Ruth H. Nuss of Great Bend will celebrate her 92nd birthday today. She was born on Jan. 20, 1916, in Bemidji, Minn., to the Rev. and Mrs. Otto J. Brauer.

She married Melvin O. Nuss, a Great Bend attorney, in 1941 and moved to Great Bend at that time. Mr. Nuss died in 1998. A homemaker, she has shown a lifetime interest in beauty, trees and anything sweet.

Kenny Sellens 91st

Mary Louise Wilhite, formerly of Larned, will celebrate her 85th birthday with a card shower.

She was born on Dec. 15, 1922, the daughter of George and Edna (Batman) Hill of Pawnee Rock. She graduated from Pawnee Rock High School in 1940 and from Fort Hays State College with a degree in elementary education. She taught in rural Barton County, Pawnee Rock and Larned for 50 years. She married Woodroe “Woody” Wilhite on Oct. 3, 1943. He died Sept. 13, 2001.

Dean Standau 78th

Dean D. Standau will celebrate his 78th birthday on Dec. 10, 1929. He was born in Minneapolis.

A resident of Salina and Hoisington for most of his life, he was employed by Kansas Brick and Tile for almost 20 years and managed several truck dealerships in different states. He married Alice Stanton. She died in April 1996.

Beulah Knisley was born Nov. 20, 1907, in Sherwood, Ohio. She married Roger Unruh in 1933. They moved to Pawnee Rock in 1937. She taught fifth and sixth grades at Radium from 1956 to 1960 and fourth grade at Riley Elementary in Great Bend from 1961 to 1972.

She was born Nov. 20, 1927, on a farm near Dundee to Harold and Addie Harms. She married James "Jim" Fuller in 1964. Doyle Rand 80th

Doyle Rand will celebrate his 80th birthday with an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 at the Oil and Gas Museum on West 10th in Great Bend.

Doyle was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Arkansas and grew up there. He entered the U.S. Army at age 18 and served in the 2nd Armored Division. He then moved to Kansas, where he was affiliated with the oil industry for 32 years, from roughneck to production superintendent. In 1949, he married Betty Rutter in Coats. As he continued in the oil business, he also built a large mobile home park and then owned and operated a motel. Since 1980, he has been exclusively involved in real estate.

Eunice Braden 95th

Eunice Braden of Lyons will celebrate her 95th birthday on Nov. 11. A family celebration is planned later with her son Steve and family who live in Texas.

She was born to Grover Ward and Carrie Shumway McPherson near Lyons. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1929 and attended Sterling College for two years, receiving a teaching certificate. On Nov. 4, 1932, she married Gene E. Braden in Lyons. He died Jan. 17, 1996. They lived in Bushton for 28 years, in Buhler for two years and in Ellinwood for 30 years, before returning to Lyons in 1992 and moving into Noble Place. Mrs. Braden was employed in a variety of retail businesses, served as postmaster in Bushton in the 1950s and Boogaarts in Great Bend as a bookkeeper and cashier, where she retired in 1978. She served the United Methodist Church as a teacher and lay delegate and with United Methodist Women and WSCS in local district officer positions.

Mr. Ensley was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Jefferson. He married Evalee Cooper on June 25, 1947, in Stockton. In 1965, the couple moved from Plainville to Great Bend with their four sons and twin daughters. He worked in the oil field for several years and then founded Garb's Welding, Inc. in 1974. His sons continue to operate the business. His wife Evalee, died Sept. 3, 1995. He spends time traveling and visiting with friends and family and checking on the boys at the shop.

Former Great Bend resident Dorothy M. Hannah will celebrate her 90th birthday with a family celebration this week.

Born in Jetmore on Oct. 26, 1917, to Roscoe and Dollie Wilson, she graduated from high school in 1935. After high school, she worked for two years to earn enough money for college, graduating from Southwestern College in 1941. She worked for the federal government for several years, and worked in Washington, D.C. during World War II. She married John T. Hannah Oct. 30, 1953, in Jetmore. John died in April 2000. The couple lived all their married life in Great Bend. Dorothy worked as a paralegal at Diets, Hardman, Dahlberg and Watkins and at Waddell and Reed, retiring in 1982.

Mrs. Hannah has two children, Kathy Souter and husband Roger of Kechi, and son Tom and wife Jan of Florissant, Colo. She has four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, Alicia and Kalee Hannah, Matthew, Mollie Souter and Jeff Souter, and Tracie Klinke.

Lillian Pryor 100th

Lillian Josephine "Jo" Pryor, Great Bend, celebrated her 100th birthday recently with friends and family.

She was born Lillian Josephine Seeger on July 28, 1907, in West Salem, Wis. On Aug. 31, 1907, her mother died and she was brought to Great Bend to be raised by her mother's sister. She married Leonard Campbell "Bud" Pryor on Dec. 20, 1941. He died in 1979.

She celebrated a century of life at a party hosted by her daughters, Susan Jane and Jo Ellen. Mrs. Pryor has been a resident at Cedar Park Apartments since March 1996.

About five years ago she was featured in the Great Bend Tribune because she knits caps for newborn babies at Central Kansas Medical Center. She said she continues to knit the caps as a project coordinated through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

She married Al Burns Jan. 24, 1942, when they were both teaching in WaKeeney. They moved to Great Bend in November of 1945. Frances taught 24 years at Eisenhower Elementary School. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and its organizations, as well as other community groups, and served in many capacities as an officer in these various groups, before moving to Overland Park three years ago. She remains very connected to her friends and church in Great Bend.

She graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1935. Her life has been a busy one. She worked with Girl Scouts for 12 years and was actively engaged in the banking and real estate fields until her retirement.

Weldon Howell 90th

Weldon Howell, McPherson, will celebrate his 90th birthday with a public reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 24 at The Cedars Wellness Center, 1021 Cedars Drive, McPherson.

Howell was born June 6, 1917, in the Salem community near Nickerson in Reno County. He was reared in Pawnee County near Larned, where he married Mildred Merkel in 1939. She died in 2001. They farmed in the Zook community south of Larned until 1957, when they moved to their farm northwest of St. John in Stafford County. They moved to McPherson in 1999. He married Ruth Giles in 2002 in McPherson.

His children and spouses are: Veneta and Paul Ediger and Nolan and JoAnn Howell all of McPherson; Norman and Mei-Feng Howell of Freemont, Calif.; and Janice and Terry Wokaty of Jacksonville, Ark. Howell has 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; four stepchildren and spouses, 14 step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.

Catherine Seyfert of Hunter will celebrate her 80th birthday on June 20. Born Catherine Krier on June 20, 1927, in Claflin, she married Eugene Seyfert on Oct. 28, 1947, in Claflin. He died in 2005.

Carl Soden 92nd

Carl Soden will celebrate his 92nd birthday on May 21. Mr. Soden served with the Navy in World War II under Col. Nimitz and was in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. He taught school and did some coaching in Caney. While he was in Coffeyville he started the first recreation program in the state. He continued in his service from 1949 to 1981 as the first director of the Great Bend Recreation Commission, as coach and mentor for young and old alike. He also served with the Rotary Club until his 90th year.

Carl and his wife Dorothy have lived in Great Bend many years. They have two daughters, Doris Carl and the late Sally Soden.

George Mitchell, formerly of Great Bend, will celebrate his 80th birthday on April 20. He was a truck driver for many years before being employed by Koch Industries/Matador Services as a dispatcher, where he retired. He and his wife, Ruby, then spent several years traveling the United States with their camper. They now make their home in Horseshoe Bay, Texas.

Elfreida Woydziak of Claflin will celebrate her 90th birthday on April 11 with her family.

She was born April 11, 1917, to Robert and Anna (Reif) Lang at Beaver. She married Edwin Woydziak on Oct. 11, 1938, at Beaver. They lived in Hitschmann for many years. She was a housewife and he worked for NCRA. Edwin died on March 19, 1970.

Their children are Betty (deceased) and her husband Tom, of Omaha, Neb., Bonnie, and her husband Jerry, of Boulder, Colo., and Alan, and his wife Beth, of Littleton, Colo. Mildon Yeager 80th

Born April 9, 1927 in Larned, he joined the US Navy during World War II, returning and graduating from Larned High School in 1947. He married Ida K. Carlson on July 4, 1950. He was a building contractor and employed with the National Park Service at Fort Larned for 21 years before retiring in 1992.

Willis Stoskopf was born on April 2, 1917. He has lived in Hoisington his entire life and at his current home for 68 years. He has been a dairyman, worked for a geophysics crew in the oil fields of New Mexico and Kansas, and continues to be a farmer.

Mr. Stoskopf is a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a 45-year member of the Elks. He served as the treasurer of the South Homestead Township for 40 years. He was also a grand marshal of the Hoisington Labor Day parade. He graduated from Hoisington High School in 1934 and married Elizabeth McKinstry in Hagerman, N. M., in July 1938. The couple have been world travelers.

Mr. and Mrs. Stoskopf have two daughters, Beth Lee (Wayne) Flohr of Belton, Texas, and Ruth Dawn (Sid) Cain of Andover, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Vivian Grossardt of Claflin will celebrate her 85th birthday on March 27. A lifelong resident of the Claflin community, she is active in the United Methodist Church as organist and volunteers her musical talents with long-term care residents in surrounding communities.

She married Harold Grossardt on Oct. 20, 1945. He died Aug. 10, 2000. Evelyn Beltz, Bazine, will celebrate her 80th birthday with her family. She was born March 23, 1927, at Bazine and married Sidney Beltz. He passed away Dec. 6, 1995. They lived on a farm south of Bazine until 1987, when they moved into Bazine. She is a homemaker and an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Bazine.

Leo Rounsavell 90th

Leo “Speck” Rounsavell will celebrate his 90th birthday with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on March 17 at the Great Bend Health and Rehab Center LeRoy Lightcap Memorial Room, which is located on Highway 96 across from TruValue Shopping Center.

Host and hostesses for the reception will be his son Bob Rounsavell and his wife Nita, from Oologah, Okla., and son Bill Rounsavell and wife Linda and their family from Colorado Springs, Colo. Other family members planning to attend include his sisters Edith and Ruby from Ada, Okla.

Mr. Rounsavell was a driller for Duke Drilling before retiring and was an active member of the Elks Club. He enjoyed church services at First Christian Church on Broadway.

She and her husband owned and operated the Claflin Clarion newspaper. She also served as Claflin city clerk for 30 years.
