POSTED March 8, 2018 3:14 p.m.

PARK CITY – The top seeds prevailed at the Region VI basketball tournament as the Coffeyville men and the Seward County women won titles.

Coffeyville edged Hutchinson in a thriller Wednesday night, 82-80 to capture the men’s title. Earlier in the evening, the Seward women cruised to a 59-47 win.

With that, both teams earned a berth in the upcoming NJCAA National Tournament. The Coffeyville men, ranked No. 10, are now 30-4 on the year while the Seward women, also ranked No. 10, are 30-3.

Now other teams will wait and see if they get an at-large bid to the tourney.

On the men’s side, Hutchinson is looking good as the defending champion with a 28-6 record. In the final men’s poll, Hutch came in at No. 14. Barton seems to be squarely on the bubble with a 27-6 and ranked No. 19.

For the women, Hutchinson was the only team in the region ranked, coming in at No. 19. But the Blue Dragons were thrashed by 20 in the semifinals by Independence. Indy is 26-7, Hutch 27-6, and Cowley 26-7.

The at-large selections will be made Monday.
