Whether area patrons have been holding onto dangerous chemicals over the winter, or they just come up with them in spring cleaning, Barton County Landfill Manager Mark Witt has reported that the Household Hazardous Waste Program will start another season soon.
“The Barton County Household Hazardous Waste Facility will hold its first collection of the 2011 season on Saturday, April 16 from 8 a.m. until noon at the landfill.”
Witt noted this gives area residents one more weekend to get all their hazardous waste gathered up for the first collection.
“Items accepted from residential customers will include paint, lawn and garden fertilizers, pesticides, oil, household cleaners, antifreeze, other household hazardous waste products,” Witt explained.
He added the collections will run for several months. “The program will continue through the summer — it runs from April through October — and it is free for all residents of Barton, Ellsworth, and Pawnee counties.”
Witt added earlier that the program isn’t just for drop offs.
It is also for pick ups.
Witt noted that when the chemicals are collected, those that are safe to reuse are made available to the public, and that includes paint — both interior and exterior grades — as well as cleaning, automotive and other chemical products.
For more information on the chemicals, or other recycled materials, contact the landfill, 793-1898.
