LINCOLN, NEB. — Deanna K. Starman, Lincoln, died in the arms of Jesus on April 10, at the age of 53, surrounded by her beloved son Eric and family members. Deanna bravely battled multiple sclerosis for almost 30 years and died with dignity and grace. Her sweet nature and uplifting spirit were an inspiration to all who knew her. Deanna was born on Jan. 5, 1958, in Tilden, Neb., and grew up on a farm northeast of Petersburg, Neb. She graduated class valedictorian from Petersburg High School in 1976 and received a Regents scholarship from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating with a degree in Economics and Political Science. Her professional career included working at several law firms in Lincoln, and in the financial services and insurance industries.

Deanna served as president of the Lincoln Legal Secretaries Assoc., president of the Lancaster County Young Republicans, and vice-president of the Nebraska Young Republicans. Her interest in politics led her to volunteer on many campaigns, and in 1995 she was recognized for her efforts by the Nebraska Republican Party. Deanna served as Lancaster County volunteer coordinator for the successful Hagel for U.S. Senate and Johanns for Governor campaigns in the 1990’s, and was a member of the Bereuter for Congress "Parade Brigade". In her last years, she very much enjoyed keeping up with current events and politics by watching the 24-hour Fox and Headline News channels. Deanna also volunteered in the hospice program at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital for a time.

In September 1980, Deanna was united in marriage to Bruce W. Hess, and one son, Eric was born. Eric is currently a sophomore in the Jeffrey Raikes School of Computer Science and Management at UNL which made Deanna very proud.
