David C. (Dave) Warren 1926 - 2011

WINFIELD — David C. (Dave) Warren, 84, died April 18. Born April 21, 1926 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of Merb and Mabel (Crosen) Warren. In 1944, he graduated from McKinley High School and attended Coe College, both in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1951, he graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield. He taught and coached for five years in Potwin, one year in Gossell, five years in Pretty Prairie, six years in Newton, and 20 years in Winfield. Dave had coached baseball, basketball, golf, football and gymnastics in his career, taught drivers education and middle and high school physical education, influencing many lives of young people he loved. He retired in 1988. Dave was an outstanding football and basketball official for more than 20 years. He had the privilege of knowing other fine officials and having them as close personal friends. He took pride and satisfaction in the athletes that he knew and with whom he worked. A great accomplishment of his coaching career was a state championship in baseball for Winfield in 1972 with his son Mike playing on the team.

Mr. Warren was a member of the Kansas Collegiate Officials Hall of Fame, the greater Wichita Officials Hall of Fame and Southwestern College Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Luanne of the home; sons, Mike and wife Debbie of Great Bend, and Pat and wife Angie of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bob and Don; and a sister Betty.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist in Winfield with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. A private family inurnment will follow. Memorials have been established with First United Methodist Church, Southwestern College Athletics and Cancer Center of Kansas or the choice of the charity of the donor, in care of the funeral home.
