ST JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — As players began trickling in for Friday’s start to training camp, the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with wide receiver Steve Breaston, who had his best year when Chiefs coach Todd Haley was his offensive coordinator at Arizona.
A person who asked not to be identified confirmed the Chiefs had come to terms with the 27-year-old Breaston, who caught 77 passes for 1,006 yards for Haley’s Arizona offense in 2008. The person asked not to be named because the Chiefs had not made the official announcement.
Last season, his fourth in the NFL, Breaston averaged 15.3 yards per catch and had 15 receptions for 20 yards or more. Teamed with Jonathan Baldwin, a wide receiver Kansas City drafted in the first round last April, and returning Pro Bowl wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, Breaston could give the Chiefs more offensive weapons than they’ve had in several years.
“I know he has very good speed,” quarterback Matt Cassel said as he and teammates moved in for a three-week stay in Scanlon Hall on the Missouri Western University campus. “He should be a great fit for us.”
In addition, the Chiefs said they had signed seven of their 2011 draft picks, including second-round selection Rodney Hudson, a 299-pound offensive lineman from Florida State.
Earlier Thursday, Kansas City announced the signing of six 2011 picks, headed by Allen Bailey, 6-3, 288, a third-round selection from the University of Miami.
Also signed were fourth-round selection Jalil Brown, a 6-1, 204-pound defensive back out of Colorado; Ricky Stanzi, a 6-foot-4, 228-pound quarterback from Iowa; and fellow fifth-round selection Gabe Miller, a 6-foot-3, 257-pound linebacker from Oregon State.
The others were Jerrell Powe, a defensive lineman out of Mississippi who was picked in the sixth round, and seventh-round selection Shane Bannon, a fullback who played last year at Yale.
The Chiefs also waived receiver Chris Chambers.
