Plans for a county effort to honor local military veterans will be discussed when the Barton County Commission meets at 9 a.m. Monday in the courthouse.
Some time ago, the Barton County Commission approved using part of Golden Belt Memorial Park for a special veterans section.
County Administrator Richard Boeckman noted that any Barton County citizens who served honorably in the nation’s armed forces have the ability to have free access to a burial plot in the veterans’ section of that memorial park.
And now plans for a special veterans memorial are also being finalized.
On Monday, the commission will consider the recommendations of the Memorial Parks Advisory Committee on those plans.
County officials have noted there are several ways for the public to get involved in this effort. They can help plan the development of the county’s two memorial parks, and they can help fund the veterans’ monument.
Memorial Parks Advisory Committee Chairman Mick Lang noted that there are currently four people serving on the committee and it could include another three. The only requirement is that they be from Barton County.
Anyone interested can apply at the administrator’s office in the courthouse.
People can also donate to help fund the improvements to the veterans section. To find out more about making a donation, call the administrator’s office, 793-1800.
Road and Bridge Director Dale Phillips, who has overseen the project, noted that there are several components to the veterans  memorial, include flag poles, a central monument that will feature emblems for each branch of service and other markers that will provide space for veterans’ names to be displayed.
There will be a price for names to be added to the markers, though that has not been set yet.
The total cost for the project is expected to be about $55,000, so help is being sought for the public project.
