‘Labor of Love’ events

LARNED — The Pawnee County Humane Society will sponsor the first Labor of Love races Monday, Sept. 5 — a Fast Cat Five 5K and a Labor of Love 10K.  Races will start from the PCHS Animal Shelter at the corner of 8th Street/M5Road and K-264.  Race Day registration starts at 7 a.m. with races starting at 8 a.m.   
At 10 a.m. there will be a Mutt Strut for animals to walk around the shelter grounds.  From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. hamburgers will be served at the shelter site for $5 a plate.
At 5 p.m. the Larned swimming pool goes to the dogs. The 6th Annual Labor Day Dog Swim is a fundraising event that marks the year-end closing of the pool.  It’s $5 per dog and their owners are free.

Alpha Kappa Master meets

LARNED — The Alpa Kappa Master chapter met for beginning day at the home of Alice Clapsaddle for an ice cream social Monday.  Program chair Merlene Baird distributed the yearly program books. 
Several committees noted upcoming events which include a tailgate party at the Sept. 9 Larned High School football game. President Alice Clapsaddle thanked Patty and Allen Smith for hosting the summer social at their country home.  Members voted on the budget and agreed to not have a fundraiser this year.
The next regular meeting will be Monday, Sept. 12 at the home of Rosie Rein. Wadonna King will serve as co-hostess and Rein will present the program.

CNA course to be offered

LARNED — Barton Community College will offer a certified nurse aide course on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 1 through Nov. 3 at Larned Health Care Center, 1114 W. 11th Street, in Larned. Instructor Andra Alderson will direct the class from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Students are required to complete an enrollment process that includes admission application to Barton, a reading assessment, completion of documents and payment prior to the start of the class. The fee for Barton County residents is $475, which includes tuition, fees and the state exam fee. The non-county fee is $490. A textbook fee is additional. To receive certification, students must complete the state examination. Scholarships for part-time students are available.
