Eula Illene Smith 1922 - 2011

GARDEN CITY — Eula Illene Smith, former Copeland and Sublette resident, and for the last year and a half a resident of Homestead Assisted Living, in Garden City, died Sept. 7 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. Born April 5, 1922, in St. John, she was the daughter of Roy and Opal (Williamson) Lowry. On Sept. 10, 1942, she married Elbert C. Smith in Liberal. In 1942, they farmed in the Copeland area and moved to eastern Kansas, then moved back to Copeland in 1974. He preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 1987. She taught at the Sublette Elementary School for about 20 years.

Mrs. Smith was a former church member of the Diamond Church in Fort Scott, and the United Methodist Church of Kismet.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Smith and wife Margaret of Great Bend, and Norman Smith and wife Darlene of Lafayette, La.; two daughters, Joan Smith of Mesa, Ariz., and Jillae Birney and husband Max of Sublette; one brother, Cleston Lowry of Hugoton; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Craig; a brother, Cedric Lowry; and two sisters, Fayetta Lowry and Wanna Maxwell.

A memorial has been established for Sublette Public School Foundation-Sublette High School Choir. Memorials may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Graveside services were held on Sept. 10 at Coats Cemetery, with the Rev. Debbie Fink presiding.
