One-room schoolhouse to be featured

Tired Iron Show starts Saturday

POSTED October 5, 2011 1:37 p.m.

LARNED — The one-room schoolhouse on the grounds of the Santa Fe Trail Center will be filled with the voices of children during the Tired Iron Show on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8-9.
The historic L’Dora School building will come alive with busy boys and girls as they choose a costume to wear and enter the classroom ready to learn. Equipped with a blackboard, slates, a few textbooks and much ingenuity, the teacher, Linda Slavik, will carry on with the heritage of passing along cultural values and a sound knowledge of the three “R’s”.
With recitation, a spelling bee, and music she knows how to challenge young minds and will introduce the families to the community spirit that made education on the plains of Kansas an integral part of life.
Participants are reminded to think of the commitments homesteaders made because of their love of the land and an understanding of the value of education.
This event is sponsored by James R Boyd, who has long been a promoter of education. Boyd, of Wichita and a long-time supporter of the Santa Fe Trail Center, said he loves knowing that the schoolhouse is continuing to be a central part of the community.
