Warren Eugene Kerbs 1923 - 2012

OVIEDO, FLA. — Warren Eugene Kerbs, formerly of Great Bend, died on Dec. 28 at his home in Oviedo, Fla. Warren was born on April 6, 1923 in Paxico, and graduated from Claflin High School in 1941. He attended Kansas State University, playing on the basketball team, but left college for military service. He then completed his college education at Indiana University, where he earned a degree in business administration in 1948.

Warren owned a grocery store in Great Bend for many years, working in partnership with his father, Rhinehart Kerbs. He sold the store to enter the business world and had a long, successful career as a sales manager for Chevron Chemical Corporation. He also established the Warren Kerbs Undergraduate Scholarship for outstanding business students at Indiana University. He was married to Joann (Pundsack) Kerbs for 59 years and in the most recent years, was her devoted caregiver.

Warren was always strongly focused on his family and his faith, and placed a great priority on the value of education for his children and his grandchildren. His love of sports, particularly IU basketball and Yankee baseball, gave him great joy over the years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, providing his family limitless support, guidance and encouragement in all things.

He was an active and supportive member of St. Stephens Catholic Community in Oviedo, Fla.

In addition to his wife Joann, he is survived by his son Jon (and Nancy) Kerbs; daughters, Dana Kerbs (and Leo) Urrutia and Tracey Kerbs Lane; grandchildren Kevin and Megan Kerbs, Brian and Laura Urrutia, and Colin and Zachary Lane; and sisters Alice Kerbs Hopkins and Darlene Kerbs Mathers. He was preceded in death by his parents Rhinehart and Elizabeth Kerbs; and his brother Gerald Kerbs.

A memorial service will be held in Great Bend at a later date.
