T-Birds turn back GBHS in fourth

EMPORIA — Curbing a fourth-quarter comeback bid, Shawnee Heights High School held on for a 38-35 victory over Great Bend on Saturday in the seventh-place game of the 38th Annual Glacier’s Edge Girls Basketball Tournament.
Great Bend (1-12) trailed 22-17 at halftime and 32-26 after three quarters before the Thunderbirds kept the Lady Panthers at bay in the final period.
“At times we played well,” Great Bend head coach Jason Tatkenhorst said. “I felt we didn’t finish off the first half off very well and our second quarter wasn’t very good.
“The girls really came out fired up at halftime and we got a three-point play by Morgan Harwood and another bucket to get within one point and then we tied it up. It was a pretty tight ballgame all the way through.”
Harwood, a sophomore post player, scored a career-high 20 points, hitting nine shots from the field and 2 of 3 free throws. It was her second straight game to reach double figures as she scored 11 against Emporia.
“She kind of got some confidence from Friday’s game and I think it carried over,” Tatkenhorst said of Harwood. “The biggest thing we’ve talked about with our posts is to go in and get some rebounds yourself and give yourself some chances to score.
“She made some jumpers from the outside and in the paint and she was crashing the boards really hard.”
Danielle Poblarp led Heights (3-10) with 11 points.
Sophomore guard McKenna Mauler added eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and Liz Kutina scored six points for Great Bend, which returns to action on Tuesday night at home against Hoisington, starting at 6.
