TOPEKA — Great Bend High School head boys’ swimming coach Steve Beaumont is calling this year’s Class 5-1A meet one of the best for the Panthers.
“We swam very solid in the prelims, but we also came back and swam well on Saturday,” Beaumont said. “Last year, we swam out of our minds on Friday, and then we kind of came back down to Earth the next day. I think it’s a mental aspect to coming out and competing for two straight days.
“I think all of our swimmers made it to the second day. Nick Moyers and Ky Heeke didn’t make it to Saturday in their individual events, but I think that helped them swim harder in their relays.”
Sophomore Justin Kuhlman finished in seventh place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.93 seconds.
Kuhlman, who started the season slowly still recovering from shoulder surgery, was selected as a second-team all-state swimmer.
“He had surgery, I would say, in early May for a torn labrum,” Beaumont said. “He was cleared to start swimming easily probably in September.
“He swam the first couple of meets this season and he had some pain in his shoulder, so we held him out in El Dorado, which was our third meet of the season.”
Kuhlman swam in the 200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle as well.
“The physical barrier was one thing, but the big thing for Justin was the mental aspect of coming back from an injury,” Beaumont said. “The fear that he would reinjure that shoulder kept him from really diving in entirely. Not knowing how much he could push his shoulder.
“I don’t know if he got completely past that until Saturday. In the 200 freestyle, it was the first time that coach Kody Cook and I first saw him willing to go out and swim all out. He shaved three seconds off of his time in the 200 free.”
Kuhlman took ninth place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.71.
The 200 medley relay team, which included Kuhlman, Michael Haines, Ky  Heeke and Dylan Dreiling, finished in 10th place, touching in at 1:47.75.
Haines took 10th place with a time of 2:12.36 in the 200 individual medley.
Beaumont, who was voted as the Class 5-1A state Coach of the Year, said that the Panthers accomplished a lot this season.
“It was extremely successful looking back at the whole season,” Beaumont said. “We knew we had some holes after the seniors we lost last year. They were seniors that had finished in the top eight at state. Our goal was to come out and get better every day.”
The Panthers will be losing five senior swimmers and a team manager.
“Kade Cook, Dylan Dreiling, Kyle Bussen, Nick Elliot and Alex Freund,” Beaumont said, “and also Katlin Fuel, who has been with us for four years now. I think the big thing we got with this group of seniors was their leadership.
“We had a lot of young swimmers, a lot of inexperience, so having their leadership was very important. They were great kids, great swimmers.”
