PARK CITY — It wasn’t the outcome that he was looking for, but Great Bend High School wrestler Chris Burley took second place at the Class 5A state wrestling tournament on Saturday in the 120-pound weight class.
Burley blew through the first two rounds and got a two-point win to advance to the final match, but Isaac Dulgarian of St. Thomas Aquinas beat Burley by a major decision of 15-2 at Hartman Arena.
“He was the kid that we knew he was going in,” GBHS head coach Norbert Muth said. “It would have been a tough order with two arms. With one, it’s just not easy.”
Burley was down 2-0 in the first round before a timeout was called for by the referees. Burley injured his elbow, but after more than a minute of talking with the trainers, he continued to compete.
“When he came out of bounds in that first period, he tweaked it a little bit,” Muth said. “I don’t know what’s wrong with it. We’ll have to have it evaluated, but obviously that doesn’t help much.”
Burley beat Daniel Gray of Mill Valley by major decision 15-1 to start things on Friday. He followed that up by pinning Isaac Russell of Emporia and beating Patrick Burrus of Kapaun Mt. Carmel by a 9-7 decision to move on to the first-place match.
Chris’ little brother Greg finished in third place, improving on last year’s sixth-place finish.
“Last year, I placed sixth,” Greg Burley said. “It’s a big improvement. I think every year it’s about improvement. Taking third at state after you got sixth, it’s climbing the ladder. Hopefully, I can get that big one here soon.”
Greg beat Anthony Monares of Newton by a 4-2 decision in the third-place match of the 132 weight class. The GBHS sophomore was up 4-0 in the second round.
“I knew he was a really good guy, and I was just trying to keep from not doing anything crazy,” Greg said. “I wanted to really control the match. I felt great (after scoring the first two points). I felt like I just had to make sure he didn’t score.”
All eight wrestlers made it to the second day of competition.
Darian Yager (160) was the only other wrestler to win a match on Saturday, pinning Devin Ellison of Mill Valley before losing to Arkansas City’s Trey Dice by an 8-3 decision. Yager finished 2-2 at the state tournament.
Ryan DesLauriers (106), Brett Roberts (126), Brodie Bretz (138), Emerson Campbell (152) and Bryce Hofmeister (170) were each 1-2.
“I can’t say that our kids disappointed me,” Muth said. “I think we did about what I thought we would do. Few of our kids, it’s the first time they’ve been here, and they’re new to it. The excitement of it all kind of gets to them.”
Of the eight that qualified, seven will return for next season. Bretz is the lone senior among the wrestlers at state.
Great Bend finished in 15th place as a team with 54.5 points.
