Stickney to sell distributorship

POSTED June 21, 2012 2:50 p.m.

It’s time for Tom Stickney and his wife to be closer to their kids and grandkids.
“I am retiring,” he said. This comes after 37 years in the beverage distribution business in Great Bend. The couple is moving to the Kansas City area where their children live.
“I really like Great Bend,” Stickney said. “Great Bend has been good to me.”
Stickney opened his business in August of 1974. “It’s been a while,” he said.
But, it’s time for a change.
However, the business he established will remain. Dallas-based Glazer’s Inc. announced Tuesday the signing of a agreement to acquire the assets of Stickney Distributing Inc, which serves the greater southwest Kansas area and sells beer products and non-alcoholic beverages.
“I am very pleased with Glazer’s purchase of my company,” Stickney said. “Glazer’s is a well-respected company and I am leaving my brands, my customers and my employees in good hands.”
Stickney said the deal should be finalized by mid August. He is also half owner of Southwest Distributing in Hays, and Glazer’s is buying that as well.
“We are extremely excited by our acquisition of Stickney Distributing,” said Glazer’s President and CEO Sheldon “Shelly” Stein. “This is part of our overall corporate strategy to aggressively expand our portfolio in the beer distribution business.”
“We are pleased to add another distributorship to our beer footprint,” said Glazer’s Corporate Executive Vice President Phil Meacham. “The marketing area we have just acquired enables us to expand our MillerCoors footprint in a state where we already have a successful distribution network established.”
Glazer’s, one of the country’s largest privately held companies, currently operates in 14 states, and is one of the nation’s largest distributors of wine, spirits and malt beverage products. The company has operations in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. The third-generation family business was founded in Dallas in 1933. For more information, visit
