ELLINWOOD — There are new books at the Ellinwood School/Community Library. They are:
“I Am A Man” by Joe Starita. In 1877, Chief Standing Bear’s Ponca Indian Tribe was forcibly removed from their lands in Nebraska and marched south to Indian Territory. A third of the tribe died on the harrowing march, including Chief Standing Bear’s son. This book chronicles what happened when Standing Bear left the reservation to return his son’s body to the Ponca’s traditional burial ground, and his legal struggles to constitutional protections.
