McPHERSON — The Great Bend High School girls’ basketball team had its moments while taking on Class 5A No. 7-ranked McPherson Tuesday night at The Roundhouse.
Trouble was, McPherson’s girls bolted to a 15-0 lead before the Lady Panthers could even get untracked.
McPherson post player Katelyn Loecker, a 6-foot senior, pumped in 20 points and perimeter threat Casyn Buchman added nine of her 14 points during the second quarter as the Bullpups improved to 5-1 on the season.
Senior guard Kalie LeShore had a season-high 14 points to lead Great Bend (1-5), which trailed 18-8 after one quarter before closing to 40-25 at halftime.
LeShore led a second-quarter GBHS surge, having success driving to the basket in which she scored seven points in the period as McPherson only outscored the Lady Panthers 22-17 in the period.
However, the Bullpups had an answer every time Great Bend got close. After the Lady Panthers cut the margin to 33-23 at the 2:49 mark in the second quarter, McPherson scored the final seven points of the half to build its lead to 15 points at the break.
Buchman, who didn’t play in the first quarter, and Loecker took over the game during the third period. Buchman had a three-point play, Loecker had a pair of buckets in the paint and then Buchman made a backdoor cut for a layup to cap a 9-0 run and put the Bullpups ahead 51-27 at the 3:19 mark.
Lexie Brack added seven points, and Kelsey Crosby and Olivia Basye scored six points apiece for Great Bend, which was playing without injured senior Cassidy Tutak.
The Lady Panthers, who made 10 of 11 free throws against the Bullpups, travel to Garden City on Friday night for the Western Athletic Conference opener. Tipoff is set for 6.
