Home tweet home: How social media is giving the homeless a hand up

On April 24, more than 800 University of Denver students, faculty and staff volunteered for Project Homeless Connect, an event which provides one-on-one support for homeless citizens.

R.D. Plasschaert credits one main thing for pulling her out of homelessness: Twitter.
“Social media is the reason I was moved out of homelessness,” Plasschaert said. “The government agencies, shelters and others were not the reason I was placed in housing.”
Plasschaert isn’t alone. Nonprofit groups, aid organizations and advocates are increasingly using social media to connect with the homeless. The homeless also put a high value on the devices that keep them connected.
