The grasshoppers cometh in 1874

This map illustrates the reach of the 1874 Grasshopper Plague which devastated the American Midwest. Relief efforts which procured supplies from the eastern states and provided leave to settlers were welcomed by those who chose to stay rather than migrate back to their families.

Each week we’ll take a step back into the history of Great Bend through the eyes of reporters past. We’ll reacquaint you with what went into creating the Great Bend of today, and do our best to update you on what “the rest of the story” turned out to be.
