Former coach Kaiser formally charged

A criminal complaint charging former Great Bend High School track coach Todd Eric Kaiser with one count of sexual exploitation of a child was filed Thursday, Feb. 2, in Barton County District Court. The defendant was arrested June 6, 2016, and posted a $50,000 surety bond, which remains in effect.

Zoo news: A Bough for Bonnie the Black Bear

Bonnie, the Black Bear at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, received a new piece of furniture Monday when DJ's Tree Service delivered the remains of a huge maple tree. Because the City of Great Bend does not own a crane, Stone Sand Company donated use of the crane that lifted the hollow tree trunk over the fence and dropped it into the exhibit.

BOE honors Patty Vratil

Thursday's Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education meeting ended with a surprise for long-time employee Patty Vratil, who serves as clerk of the school board. She was given an "Award of Excellence" in honor of her 36 years of employment with the district.

The death of actress Mary Tyler Moore this week had Americans remembering beloved TV characters and a woman with great talent. In the 1960s she played Laura Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and in the '70s she was spunky Mary Richards in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

Old dorms to become PE classrooms

Some of the oldest student housing units at Barton Community College will be converted into space for physical education classes such as dance, yoga, Zumba and karate. The BCC Board of Trustees met Tuesday and accepted the only bid submitted to replace the roof on "housing units 3 and 4" and tear out the interior of the facility.

Barton County seeks '100 Who Care'

Local residents hope to raise $10,000 for charity in one hour through a new group called "100 Who Care Barton County." The plan is to find at least 100 people willing to donate $100 to a worthy cause, and to repeat the process every quarter in 2017.

More cancellations announced as storm looms

When the National Weather Service office at Wichita issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook and Winter Storm Watch for most of central Kansas last Thursday, Barton County residents prepared for the worst. The Barton County Sheriff's Office urged caution and reported that the Road and Bridge Department was prepared for a major storm with up to 1 inch accumulation of ice Friday through Sunday.
