Murder charges dropped

First-degree murder charges against three men were dismissed Thursday in Barton County District Court. Alejo Villegas, Juventino Villegas and Adam Suppes still face felony charges that include aggravated burglary, stemming from Nov. 15, 2015, when they allegedly broke into the home of Sterling Mills with Aron Villegas. Aron was shot by Mills and died.

Geraldine Marshall 1920 - 2016

Geraldine Marshall, 95, died July 4, 2016, at Brookdale Senior Living in Great Bend. Born Oct. 28, 1920, at Ulman, Mo., she was the daughter of Barney and Anna Dawson. In 1944, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Missouri and later earned her Master's Degree from Webster College. On Aug. 24, 1947, she married James Marshall at St. Louis, Mo. He died March 26, 1967. She was a primary teacher for 26 years, with 17 of those as first grade teacher at Prairie School in Prairie Village. After raising her family and retiring ...

Zoo curator comments on human behavior

Just days after a child wandered into a gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo, the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo had its own incident of unwanted human-animal contact. But in this case, it was the animals who were endangered.

City Band plans patriotic concert

The Great Bend City Band's weekly concerts move indoors for the month of July. Free concerts will be offered Thursday, July 7 and Tuesday, July 12, at the Crest Theater, 1905 Lakin Ave. Both of the free concerts are open the public and start at 8:15 p.m.

Concerns raised over Galatia water issue

Judge sends women to drug treatment

Barton County District Judge Ron Svaty announced he isn't giving up on Stacey Henderson, the 23-year old woman who asked to be sent to prison so she wouldn't be tempted to use drugs. Instead of granting her request, the judge sentenced her Wednesday to two years on probation. But she won't be out on the street.

Motorist injured in hit-and-run

A hit-and-run injury accident was reported at 3 p.m. Friday at Walnut Bowl, 3101 Washington St. According to the Great Bend Police Department, a vehicle pulled from the driveway and struck a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Jim Potter, 28, of Great Bend, then left the scene. Potter tried to avoid a collision but the other vehicle struck the Avalanche on the rear of the passenger side, causing it to flip and roll.

Camp Hope ends on high note

Camp Hope-Heartland concluded Saturday and sponsors are already looking ahead to 2017. The free, week-long camp is for Kansas and Missouri children who have cancer or have had cancer. It is held each year at Barton Community College's Camp Aldrich, located between Cheyenne Bottoms and Claflin.
