Meals on Wheels delivers

Seven days a week, Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver lunch to dozens of homebound ill, elderly and disabled people in Great Bend and Hoisington. The service is also available five days a week in Ellinwood, where clients can order frozen meals for the weekends, said Mary Lou Warren, chairman of the Meals on Wheels Board of Directors.

Barton County Arts Center joins This Place Matters Contest

The Barton County Arts Center, housed at 1401 Main St. in Great Bend's oldest stone and masonry building, is now listed in the "This Place Matters Community Challenge." Friends of the Arts Center are encouraging everyone to vote in the online challenge, where the winner will receive $25,000, said Karen Neuforth, executive director of the Barton County Arts Council Inc.

IRS offers one-time relief program for small charities

Several small nonprofit organizations in central Kansas, including the Barton County 4-H Holding Board in Great Bend and Central Kansas Thread Benders Quilt Guild in Radium, are at risk of losing their tax-exempt status because they missed a tax filing deadline. These organizations can still preserve their status by filing returns by Oct. 15, 2010, under a one-time relief program, the Internal Revenue Service announced last week.
