South Hoisington stories preserved

A project to preserve the history of South Hoisington started with a mini-grant from the Kansas Humanities Council but grew into a major undertaking for the Barton County Historical Society. The historical society has until Jan. 31 to fulfill the terms of the grant, but research on the community will continue, said Beverly Komarek, executive director of the historical society's museum.

Slide-offs result in minor injuries

As the snow fell Saturday, the Barton County Sheriff's Office warned motorists to stay off the roads if possible, and the Emergency Accident Reporting System went into effect. Motorists did not have to immediately report non-injury accidents if no alcohol was involved and the roadway was not blocked, but were advised to report accidents as soon as possible after the storm had cleared.

BCC prepares for new season of GED students

Nationwide changes are coming in 2014 for General Educational Development exams and how they are administered. Barton Community College's Center for Adult Education will soon be starting its 9-week GED Preparation Class.

‘Miss Amanda’ heads Children’s Department at library

The new head librarian in the Children's Department at Great Bend Public Library is no stranger to children who visit the area regularly. Amanda Moran-Jones joined the staff two years ago as the assistant children's librarian and was promoted to the head children's librarian with the departure of Eric Coulbourne.

BCC trustees plan Topeka trip

Some of the trustees of Barton Community College will join President Dr. Carl Heilman when he travels to Topeka next month at the start of the next Legislative session. Gov. Sam Brownback will give his State of the State address on Jan. 15, and Heilman is encouraging trustees to come to Topeka for two or three days.

Police: Two burglaries related
