Zoo news: Cool gator ready for winter

Alvin the alligator did not want to be caught recently when workers at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo attempted to move him to warmer winter quarters. So, while Allister, the other 'gator on the pond, is in a temperature-controlled area, Alvin is still outside for zoo visitors to view.

USD 428 video talks about MTSS

Parents of Great Bend USD 428 students can learn more about the Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) by watching a seven and a half minute video produced by Great Bend High School instructor Dan Heath. The video features art teacher Sergio Ramirez, board member Susan Young and parent Lisa Moore discussing the move to MTSS that began at Great Bend schools in 2015.

Window dressing

The City of Wichita will start the new year with a civilian oversight board for its police. Its purpose, according to the Wichita Eagle, is "to help improve community relations and put another set of eyes on complaints and officer misconduct cases." It is a trend that more cities are following. On paper, Great Bend was ahead of this curve by creating a Police Community Advisory Committee about 15 years ago.
