Wildfire reported at Quivira

STAFFORD COUNTY - A wildfire reported Thursday afternoon in the northeast corner of Quivira National Wildlife Refuge scorched about 1,400 acres on the western edge of Stafford County and a bit of Rice County, according to Bill Waln, fire management officer at the refuge. Firefighters remained on scene into the night and were back Friday morning to make sure it didn't rekindle.

The Kansas Court of Appeals has ruled against a woman who admitted to violating her probation on a drug charge but who disagreed with Barton County District Judge Ron Svaty's decision to send her to prison for more than eight years.

Preliminary hearing held for former CVB Director Cris Collier

Crystal Jo Collier, the former director of the Great Bend Convention and Visitor's Bureau, was bound over for trial on two felony charges filed against her in 2017. At a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Barton County District Court, Magistrate Judge Richard Burgess determined that probable cause was found on both counts and Collier's arraignment was scheduled for 9 a.m. on April 25.

Girl Scouts brighten day for preschooler with heart disease

Great Bend Girl Scouts are wrapping up cookie sales but they took time recently to befriend a 4-year-old girl with a rare disease. Troop 11142 leader Dana Morse said they made a surprise package for little Haylee, who has a congenital heart disease. She was diagnosed with a complete atrioventricular (AV) canal heart defect and pulmonary hypertension in 2015. She lives in Saint Peters, Missouri.
