Youth Academy takes teens behind the scenes

Great Bend youths spent most of the day Friday learning what makes the City of Great Bend tick. For the 41st Youth Academy, they visited areas seldom seen, such as the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and places they thought they knew, such as the zoo.

Nex-Tech TV crew visits Great Bend Zoo

Nex-Tech's cable TV show "What's Happening Now" has been highlighting events and attractions in Hays and other parts of western Kansas for several episodes. This past week, host Jenny Leiker and crew visited the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo, an attraction Leiker said she has loved since moving to this area. A full 30-minute segment will be dedicated to the zoo.

City Band gives nod to Kansas weather

Steven Lueth knows that the Great Bend City Band's summer concert season is at the mercy of fickle Kansas weather. When the band kicked off its 2015 series a week ago, the concert had to move across the street and indoors, to the comfort of the Crest Theater. This Thursday, music lovers were able to listen outdoors, with the performance in the Moses Band Shell south of the Barton County Courthouse.

Furlough? Legislature need to pass a budget today

The Kansas Legislature, as of Thursday evening, has not passed a 2016 budget. If the situation doesn't change soon, many state employees will go on mandatory, unpaid furloughs at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

Local officers, athletes, carry torch

Local law enforcement officers and members of The Storm Special Olympics team met in front of the Wetlands Waterpark on Wednesday to continue a tradition. They carried the "Flame of Hope," a torch that will light the fire Friday at the 2015 Special Olympics Summer Games at Wichita State University.

Arctic foxes born at zoo

Eight new animals arrived at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo on May 24, surprising even the zookeepers. Arctic fox couple Todd and Vixie have given birth to their first litter.

Zoo News: Keeper Chats

The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo, 2123 Main, is staying open longer this summer, and offering daily Keeper Chats, where the public can learn more about the animals. The zoo is open every day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but staying open until 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As always, admission is free.

​Charges in motorcycle fatalities allege improper safety equipment

The trailer that broke free from a pickup and hit a motorcycle on Great Bend's 10th Street last August, causing the deaths of a Hutchinson couple, did not have an adequate safety chain, according to the criminal complaint filed this week in Barton County District Court. The complaint also alleges the load was not securely fastened.

The fourth suspect in a kidnapping investigation was arrested Monday in Ellinwood, authorities confirmed.

Charges filed in fatal 2014 accident

A Great Bend man has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, in connection with an accident that claimed the lives of a husband and wife riding a motorcycle through Great Bend last August.

Woman who took Honor Flight money sentenced to prison

LaVeta D. Miller was sentenced Tuesday to 25 months in prison, and ordered to pay more than $129,000 in restitution, for stealing money from Central Prairie RC&D. Barton County District Judge Ron Svaty granted a departure from sentencing guidelines that would have placed Miller on probation.

Kidnapping reported Saturday

Three people were booked into the Barton County Jail on kidnapping charges Saturday evening, while a fourth suspect remained at large. The alleged victim, Robin Pierce, contacted police from Great Bend Regional Hospital.
