Longoria jury selection starts Monday

Jury selection for the Adam Longoria capital murder trial will start at 9 a.m. Monday and is expected to take two to four days, according to Ron Keefover, the Judicial Administration's education-information officer.

EXUBERANT: Iola’s Wicoff wins third Sunflower Spelling Bee

The winner of the Great Bend Tribune's 2012 Sunflower Spelling Bee is Clara Wicoff, an eighth grader from Iola. This is the third time for her to win the bee and advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Barton County Women Making a Difference

March in Women's History Month, and the Barton County Historical Village and Museum has chosen this time to present a new exhibit: Women Making a Difference. All of the women in this exhibit lived in Barton County, with one notable exception, Museum Director Beverly Komarek said.

Auditor praises BCC stewardship

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees received more than a clean audit report Thursday from Doug Volkland. The certified public accountant with D. McMillin Chartered presented a positive financial statement as part of the 2010-2011 audit.

Stolen truck, ATV, recovered by officers

A stolen pickup recovered Monday night by Barton County Sheriff's Office detectives was probably the same vehicle that led officers on a high-speed pursuit on Saturday, officials said.

Rec board buys new equipment, approves director's pay raise

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will purchase a field groomer and attachments for use at the Veterans Park fields. The GBRC board met on Monday and approved the specification and then the quote for a Toro Sand Pro 3040 from Professional Turf Products, a Wichita firm. The base bid was $11,284, which GBRC Executive Director Diann Henderson said was below the $12,000 that has been budgeted for this piece of equipment, with money coming from the capital outlay fund. However, with two attachments the total price approved Monday was $15,666.29.

Truck driver eludes officers

A motorist in a dark colored truck led law enforcement officers on a high speed pursuit Saturday night and eventually eduled them by driving in a river bed north of SE 40 Road and SE 60 Ave.

The Great Bend Police Department recently purchased six new patrol cars, Lt. Bill Browne said. The Chevrolet Caprices will replace the oldest Dodge Chargers in the fleet.

Longoria attorneys still want venue change

Attorneys for Adam Longoria are still trying to get his upcoming jury trial moved to a location outside of Barton County. On Wednesday, defense attorneys in the capital murder case filed a supplement to a previous motion seeking a change of venue, noting, "media coverage of this case has continued since the defendant's (earlier) filings."

St. Mark Lutheran Church to host e-recycle collection

St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend will accept out-dated and broken electronic items for recycling from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 30. The church is located at 21st and Jackson St. This project is being done in cooperation with the Barton County Landfill, which also accepts "e-waste."
