President Obama told an audience this week that mandatory voting might not be a bad idea. "It would be transformative if everybody voted - that would counteract money more than anything," he said Wednesday at a town hall-style event in Cleveland, Ohio.

​Burned pickup believed to be stolen

A 2004 Ford F-350 diesel pickup was destroyed by fire early Wednesday, along with about 10 acres of grass near the Cheyenne Creek in rural Ellinwood. Undersheriff Bruce Green said it appeared to be a vehicle that was stolen from Russell County sometime between last Friday evening and Monday morning.

Softball, baseball rules approved

The Great Bend Recreation Commission is preparing for spring and summer activities. On Monday, the GBRC board of directors approved youth baseball and softball rules. Sports Director Chris Umphres said they did not change this year.

​LaVeta Miller found guilty of 2 counts theft by deception

LaVeta Diane Miller has been found guilty of two counts of theft by deception in amounts greater than $25,000 but less than $100,000. The jury in Barton County District Court began deliberations at 9 a.m. Monday, and reached a verdict shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sentencing was set for 1 p.m. on May 8. This will allow time for the state to conduct a pre-sentencing investigation (PSI) with review of any criminal history Miller may have. District Judge Ron Svaty ordered the PSI.

​BCC trustees prepare to fill vacancy

The recent death of Great Bend resident Bob Mead has created a vacancy on the Barton Community College Board of Trustees. The process for replacing a trustee after elections will be discussed at this month's board study session, set for 4 p.m. Thursday, May 14, in the Seminar Room, F-30, on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building.

Play Ball: Diamonds in use for practice, tournaments

Baseball and softball practices have started, members of the Great Bend Recreation Commission's board of directors were told Monday. The board meeting included pay raises for full-time employees and discussion on a master plan for the playground at the Great Bend Activity Center.

St. Mark Lutheran Church to host e-recycle collection

St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend will accept out-dated and broken electronic items for recycling from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 30. The church is located at 21st and Jackson St. This project is being done in cooperation with the Barton County Landfill, which also accepts "e-waste."

Prairie Godmothers – the local organization of women helping women – held a Build-A-Bag Brunch on Friday and members filled more than 100 gift bags that will be distributed to single mothers in the coming weeks.
