USD 428 ends Fiscal Year

Thursday morning was Khris Thexton's final Board of Education meeting as interim superintendent of Great Bend USD 428. His appointment to the superintendent's position became official on Saturday.

Summer school

When children return to school in August, some teachers may ask them to write about "How I Spent My Summer Vacation." In recent weeks, Great Bend USD 428's Public Relations Director Jennifer Schartz has supplied the Great Bend Tribune with a series of articles on how some teachers spend their summers. It's been fun to learn about teachers who use their "free time" to do community service work, take on a summer job, start new businesses or further their own education.

New weapons laws start Saturday

As of Saturday, Barton Community College and other Kansas colleges won't be able to ban "concealed carry" weapons on campus. A draft of a new weapons policy was discussed at Tuesday's BCC Board of Trustees meeting.

Garnett native Lee Ann Simon and her husband Larry now live in Galveston, Texas, but she rediscovered her home state this month by joining Biking Across Kansas. Along the way she encountered a portion of the Smoky Valley Scenic Byway which, according to one tour guide, "greets its visitors with picturesque windmills, abundant wildflowers and native grasses, ever changing agricultural crops, grazing cattle, and unique limestone bluffs as well as stories of the past." Great Bend schools get wireless devices for K-12

Great Bend USD 428's One to One Technology Initiative will encompass grades K-12 this fall, Superintendent Khris Thexton said Monday. The school board voted to buy 250 iPads for kindergartners and first-graders, and 250 Chromebooks for second- and third-graders, at a cost of $181,248.
