Reed: Proposal won't save money

Great Bend Superintendent Brad Reed said a proposal in the Kansas Legislature to consolidate more school districts would not save money but could hurt the quality of education in some districts. USD 428 representatives' recent trip to Topeka was discussed at Thursday's mid-month school board meeting.

New EduKan director adds transparency

A "significant deficiency" was found during the Fiscal Year 2015 audit for EduKan, the online education consortium that serves six western Kansas community colleges. However, a management letter from the auditors confirms that problems in 2015 ended after Dr. Adam John took over as chief executive officer last summer.

Spray family gets naming rights to BCC weight room

The weight room at Barton Community College's Kirkman building has been refurbished and major equipment upgrades are taking place, thanks to the generosity of the Kip and Kelly Spray family. On Tuesday, the BCC Board of Trustees officially renamed that portion of the building the Kip and Kelly Spray Family Strength Training Center.

The deadline for students across Kansas to apply for scholarships from the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation is fast approaching. Applications are due by Feb. 1, and can be found on the Kansas District website under the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation tab, or from any of the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation Board members, or by sending an email to Kenton Krehbiel, Foundation secretary-treasurer, at kkfound@st-tel.net.

​Truck fire still under investigation

The cause of a fire in a gin pole truck stolen Sunday night from Duke Drilling, 620 Hubbard St., continues to be under investigation, Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said Thursday. A mobile home fire earlier that day at 5501 Ninth St. has been ruled accidental.
