10 and Under Tennis comes to Great Bend

Dustin Weeler isn't out to create the next Roger Federer or Serena Williams, but he is introducing tennis to some very young players. During one of his recent sessions at Club 1 Fitness, the tennis instructor's students were all under 10 - and the youngest was 3 years old.

J and D Raceway shut down by acts of vandalism

Someone broke into the building at J and D Raceway on Tuesday, set fire to paper towels and threw feces around in the bathroom. Great Bend Police are investigating the case as arson, estimating damage at $350.

Homemade explosives lead to arrest

The Wichita Police Department's bomb squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were called to the Highland Hotel after homemade explosive devices were found late Friday. A Great Bend man allegedly threw one at a man, but it didn't go off.

Barton County Historical Society completes sign project

Great Bend artist Chet Cale said he's thrilled that his latest work faces paintings by internationally famous Charles B. Rogers, who became known as "The Kansan." Cale's bas relief sculpture at the Barton County Historical Society is all about central Kansas.

Still needed: Voting Rights Act isn't obsolete

The Supreme Court has voted 5-4 to strike down part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, reasoning it is no longer needed in these more enlightened times. The law was created to prevent discrimination against racial minorities wanting to vote.

Library hosts outdoor water fun

The Great Bend Public Library was no place for reading Wednesday afternoon, at least not outside where water games were going on. The children's department offered outdoor water games, starting with a water balloon toss.
