Make and Take

Nearly 20 years ago, Great Bend USD 428's Steve Wolf visited Wichita and saw a resource center where teachers could find everything they needed to make posters and bulletin boards. That was the inspiration for Great Bend's Parent Teacher Resource Center, which opened its doors in January 1997.

Riley School reports reading success

At the start of this school year, 45 percent of the students at Riley Elementary School were reading at their grade level. The staff hoped to improve those numbers by 2 percent by the end of the year.

Community colleges weigh in on mergers

The state's 19 community colleges aren't opposed to mergers involving universities and technical schools, but they are concerned about how mergers will affect overall funding, the executive director of the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees said.

Instead of backpacks full of books, some students at Great Bend High School were seen carrying work boots into the school Wednesday morning. The entire GBHS population – about 900 teenagers as well as their teachers – was invited to take part in the school's fourth annual Community Service Day.

Great Bend High School students started their fourth Community Service Day with an all-school assembly recognizing volunteer service. They received commemorative T-shirts as they boarded buses and headed to service projects. We found students spreading mulch on the My BackYard playground at the GBRC Activity Center.

Lobbyist for community colleges visits Barton

The executive director of the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees braved predicted inclement weather Tuesday to drive from Topeka for the Barton Community College Board of Trustees meeting. KACCT Director Linda Fund planned to be back in Topeka today when the 2016 Legislature resumes its work.

Blues HOF members coming to Macksville
