Food for the holidays

Members of the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club collect food boxes to deliver to families in need, Saturday morning at Dillons. The club bought 35 boxes, spending over $1,200, for deliveries to homes suggested by the Barton County Food Bank. It was a busy day for acts of kindness; club President Rob Bauer said his church, First United Methodist, also planned to deliver 105 food boxes that day.

Update on jury trial

Darrin Hirsh trial continues. Defense called its first witness shortly after 2 p.m. Friday. The jury was sent home for the weekend around 5:10 p.m. and will return at 8:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21.

Madrigal music

Choir members of the Great Bend High School Madrigals sing at the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club meeting, Wednesday at Perkins restaurant. They have been performing once or twice a day for most of this month, vocal instructor Susan Stambaugh said. Their final public appearance of the year was set for Thursday. The program featured seasonal music, including a dance number choreographed by the students. They ended with the Madrigals' signature song, "Reach out and Touch," performed with sign language.

GBHS to offer new courses in 2016

Freshmen won't be enrolling in biology next fall at Great Bend High School. Instead, they'll be taking a one-semester introductory course in physics and chemistry, plus a semester of space and earth science. They'll still need to take biology to graduate, but the overall requirement of three science credits for graduation will not change, school administrators said.

​Trooper’s domestic violence trial underway

It took most of the day Tuesday to choose a jury for Darrin Hirsh, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper charged with aggravated assault and other counts of domestic violence in Barton County District Court. The jury is scheduled to hear opening statements at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when the trial resumes.

Historical Society holds volunteer appreciation

Anyone who has served as a volunteer at the Barton County Historical Society this year was invited Thursday to an appreciation reception and a sneak peek at the holiday exhibit. The public can view the exhibit free during the Ghosts of Christmas Past Open House from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Barton County Historical Society Village and Museum, south of the Arkansas River bridge on U.S. 281 in Great Bend.

Giving Tuesday raises more than $210,000

Area endowed funds received a total of $210,780 during the Golden Belt Community Foundation's Giving Tuesday event on Dec. 1. The event, also billed as "Give Where You Live," attracted more than 400 donors to organizations throughout Barton, Pawnee, Rush and Stafford counties. The total includes a $50,000 match.
