​Bake sale planned for Shelly LeRoy

Friends and family of Shelly LeRoy will hold a bake sale in front of the Walmart Supercenter, 3503 10th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 15. LeRoy was mauled by her pit bull on July 31 in her own backyard. The Great Bend woman continues her recovery at Via Christi's St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Zoo News: ​City seeking zookeeper, greeter

The City of Great Bend website has two job openings listed at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo - for a zookeeper and for a part-time helper at the main building, the Raptor Center. The positions were held by Zookeeper Stacie Hayes, who is moving to Texas, and Gabby Hildalgo, a greeter at the Raptor Center, who plans to become a stay-at-home mom.

Money = Speech

This week a bipartisan congressional committee released its report on a two year investigation of the Internal Revenue Service. According to the Associated Press, the Senate Finance Committee report said management flaws at the IRS contributed to a "dysfunctional culture" that allowed agents to mistreat conservative political groups when they applied for tax-exempt status.

​Great Bend woman recovering after dog attack

One week after being attacked by the family dog, a Great Bend woman has undergone two surgeries and is recovering at a Wichita hospital. Shelly LeRoy expects to spend the next month or longer at Via Christi - St. Francis Hospital, according to her daughter, Rachel LeRoy.

USD 428 parents make transition to online enrollment

Tax Break

The Barton Community College administration has saved taxpayers a bundle this year by recommending a budget that does not increase the mill levy. Because oil valuations dropped, a 33.124 mill levy – last year's tax rate – will bring in fewer dollars this year - a cut of nearly $900,000.
