Gifts pour in on Giving Tuesday

Anyone who was tired of leftover turkey, excess shopping and icy sidewalks had plenty to be thankful for on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1. The Golden Belt Community Foundation received hundreds of donations for 66 local organizational endowment funds.

Zoo expected to reopen Tuesday

The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo has been closed since ice coated the sidewalks last Thursday. According to Scott Keeler, director of public lands, employees have been working to clear ice from the sidewalks so they will be safe for visitors. The zoo is expected to reopen Tuesday. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and admission is free.

​Ice causes injuries on Ellsworth County roads

The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to several injury accidents on icy roads in Ellsworth County over the extended holiday weekend. All of the people involved were wearing safety restraints.

KHP reports injury accidents, one fatal

Icy roads contributed to injury accidents in central Kansas, including a fatal rollover Thanksgiving Day in Hodgeman County. Kansas Highway Patrol responded to that accident, and to an injury accident Thursday in Ness County. There was also an injury accident Friday in Russell County.

Hoisington reschedules tonight’s events

Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce staff agree, tonight is not a great night for be out and about. So, they are rescheduling the Christmas Lighting celebration to Tuesday, Dec. 8. The city lights will still be turning on tonight, but plan to come up to the Chamber and Santa House on Dec. 8 to see Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy cocoa and cookies and sign up for Chamber Gift Certificates and the 50/50 Winter raffle.

American Legion adopts Fort Dodge soldiers

The Great Bend American Legion Auxiliary is inviting the public to help bring holiday cheer to veterans at the Kansas Soldiers' Home at Fort Dodge. People can come to the Argonne Post 180, located at 1011 Kansas Ave., and adopt a veteran from the Angel Tree, said Brenda Krueger, project chairwoman.

Barton Community College has received another "clean" or "unqualified" audit from Certified Public Accountants at Adams, Brown, Beran & Ball. College trustees approved the audit Tuesday after hearing from ABBB representatives Vicki Dreiling and Danielle Hollingshead.
