The movie "Jurassic Park" and all of its sequels, including the new "Jurassic World," have provided a big boost to the advancement of paleontology, the study of fossils. Even though the franchise got so much wrong – starting with the title, which more accurately should have been "Cretaceous Park" – scientists in the field say the movies spark interest in a way that real fossils cannot.

USD 428 approves pool lease with BCC

The Great Bend USD 428 school board approved a memorandum of understanding Monday with Barton Community College. Superintendent Brad Reed said the agreement, in effect, guarantees the school district can continue to use the college's indoor pool for the next 12 years with a $10,000 a year lease.

Nex-Tech TV crew visits Great Bend Zoo

Nex-Tech's cable TV show "What's Happening Now" has been highlighting events and attractions in Hays and other parts of western Kansas for several episodes. This past week, host Jenny Leiker and crew visited the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo, an attraction Leiker said she has loved since moving to this area. A full 30-minute segment will be dedicated to the zoo.

City Band gives nod to Kansas weather

Steven Lueth knows that the Great Bend City Band's summer concert season is at the mercy of fickle Kansas weather. When the band kicked off its 2015 series a week ago, the concert had to move across the street and indoors, to the comfort of the Crest Theater. This Thursday, music lovers were able to listen outdoors, with the performance in the Moses Band Shell south of the Barton County Courthouse.

Furlough? Legislature need to pass a budget today

The Kansas Legislature, as of Thursday evening, has not passed a 2016 budget. If the situation doesn't change soon, many state employees will go on mandatory, unpaid furloughs at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.
