Great Bend schools prepare for tech initiative

Thanks to a $327,405 grant from the Dorothy M. Morrison Foundation, Great Bend USD 428 is preparing to buy hundreds of Chromebooks and iPad tablets in 2016. The district's technology director, Ryan Axman, said the grant has advanced the timetable for the technology program by three to four years.

Hirsh found guilty of assault and battery

Darrin Hirsh was taken to the Barton County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, after being found guilty of one count of aggravated assault, two counts of criminal threat and one count of domestic battery, all involving an altercation on March 12, 2013, with Candice Hirsh, who was his wife at the time. The jurors also ruled that each of these crimes was an act of domestic violence.

​Jury still deliberating in Hirsh trial

Members of the jury in the trial of Darrin Hirsh went home Monday evening without reaching a verdict. They left around 5:40 p.m. after two and a half hours of deliberations and are expected to resume Tuesday morning around 8:30 a.m.

Witness: Victim said she fabricated story

Darrin Hirsh's former supervisor testified Friday that Candice Hirsh told him she "fabricated" a story about her husband threatening her with a gun. But prosecutors maintain Darrin asked her to say that so he wouldn't lose his job as a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.

The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education received a clean audit on its financial reports for 2014-2015, although there was a "non-compliance issue," according to an auditor.

Food for the holidays

Members of the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club collect food boxes to deliver to families in need, Saturday morning at Dillons. The club bought 35 boxes, spending over $1,200, for deliveries to homes suggested by the Barton County Food Bank. It was a busy day for acts of kindness; club President Rob Bauer said his church, First United Methodist, also planned to deliver 105 food boxes that day.

Update on jury trial

Darrin Hirsh trial continues. Defense called its first witness shortly after 2 p.m. Friday. The jury was sent home for the weekend around 5:10 p.m. and will return at 8:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21.

Madrigal music

Choir members of the Great Bend High School Madrigals sing at the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club meeting, Wednesday at Perkins restaurant. They have been performing once or twice a day for most of this month, vocal instructor Susan Stambaugh said. Their final public appearance of the year was set for Thursday. The program featured seasonal music, including a dance number choreographed by the students. They ended with the Madrigals' signature song, "Reach out and Touch," performed with sign language.
