Holy Rosary Crusade set for Saturday at courthouse square

Soup's On

Most weeks the Great Bend Tribune reports on at least one fundraiser that involves food. We can mark our calendars by pancakes, spaghetti or homemade chicken-noodle soup. In the coming weeks we'll have several opportunities to sample some food specialties by local cooks. In so doing, we may actually be helping others.

Man hit by car while attempting to upright motorcycle

A Russell man who was attempting to upright a motorcycle Saturday night was struck by a pickup on U.S. 281, about two miles south of Hoisington.

Henderson to head KRPA

Great Bend Recreation Commission Director Diann Henderson has been elected to serve as president-elect and then president of the Kansas Recreation and Parks Association. Her three-year term will begin in January.

EPA to test Great Bend industrial sites

The Environmental Protection Agency will collect soil and water samples this month at the former O'Neill Tank site near the Great Bend Municipal Airport, to determine if there is contamination from hazardous materials. The EPA also plans to collect samples at and around the former Plating Inc. site in the industrial park near the airport. Plating Inc. is a contaminated site that is monitored by EPA's Superfund Division, under a federal program to clean up uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.

Faculty contracts renewed at BCC

After more than two hours of discussion behind closed doors on Thursday, the Barton Community College Board of Trustees voted to renew faculty contracts, including two contracts the administration had recommended for "non-renewal." The vote was 4-2, and trustees promptly returned to executive session to discuss personnel matters for another hour.
