All-Star Cheer Team continues Argonne Rebels tradition

The Argonne Rebels tradition lives on. Its latest incarnation is the Argonne Rebels All-Star Cheer Team, a program for youths 6-14 years old from Barton and Pawnee counties.

'The Rifleman'

The Ladies of the Grand Old Republic are helping to restore a GAR commissioned statue, "The Rifleman," in the Barton County Courthouse Square. But Beverly Komarek, executive director of the Barton County Historical Society, wonders who will step up next time.

"The Rifleman" stands on the north side of the Barton County Courthouse, vigilantly facing south to protect the Union. Before the sculpture of a Civil War soldier turns 100 years old in November it is getting a professional makeover.

​Small fire quickly extinguished

Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said a cigarette is the suspected cause of a small grass fire reported Sunday morning at 2545 Sunset Place. Firefighters were dispatched at 11:11 a.m. and arrived to find a small area of grass that had burnt near the back door of the residence. The resident said she had put a cigarette out near the back steps.

Spider in car causes injury accident

A four-vehicle injury accident occurred Sunday afternoon when a motorist noticed a spider on her lap and lost control of a car on U.S. 56, a mile east of Great Bend.

Early birds get T-shirts for GBFD run-walk

The Great Bend Fire Department's annual run-walk for MDA will add chipped timers this year, Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said. The Nov. 7 event, which offers 10K, 5K and one-mile distances, also has a fun new name: The Stache Dash, and participants are encouraged to wear or grow mustaches. Additional awards will be given for the best real and fake mustaches.

Trumpeter swans pulled from lake at zoo

The three trumpeter swans at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo were removed from public display last week to protect them from an increase of avian influenza that is sweeping across the country, Zookeeper Sara Hamlin said. Meanwhile, the zoo's alligators have been moved to their fall/winter quarters.
