Voting mess

What will Kansas do, with thousands of potential voters in limbo? Kansas and Arizona passed laws requiring people to show proof of citizenship if they want to register to vote. But anyone who registers using the federal "motor voter" form just has to say he or she is a citizen. In January, Barton County had 315 "suspense voters," and 200 of those registrations were pending because proof of citizenship had not been submitted.

American Legion Poppy Program starts Friday

The American Legion Auxiliary will be out this Memorial weekend asking for donations to help with its Poppy Program. Members will be in front of Great Bend businesses with hand crafted poppies Friday evening and all day Saturday. They will also be out on Sunday if they still have some of the 3,000 poppies, said Marianne Krallman. She and Jeannie Munsch are cochairs of this year's Poppy Program.

BCC accepting Camp Aldrich cleanup bids

Bid requests for the job of cleaning up the site of the Camp Aldrich dining hall were sent Monday, Barton Community College officials learned Thursday. The college owns the conference center located between Claflin and Cheyenne Bottoms. The dining hall and its basement were destroyed by fire on April 12, and bids for demolition of are being accepted until May 22.

Soprano enjoys operatic success at BCC

At the end of Jessica Perez's vocal recital last Friday at Barton Community College, following the last notes of Verdi's "Caro Nome," an appreciative audience gave the soprano a standing ovation - and then the audience sang to her. The song was "Happy Birthday," in honor of her 23rd birthday.
