MIGRATION RALLY

Fifty-six "birds" traveled the Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway this past weekend, for the Great Migration Rally. The event assigned bird species to human participants, who migrated from the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center near Cheyenne Bottoms.

Rolling Sculpture Car Show part of June Jaunt

The Rolling Sculpture Car Show will roll into the Barton County Historical Society and Village on Saturday, June 2, as one of the K-96 June Jaunt events. Owners of exotic, antique and classic cars are invited to display them among the historic structures in the village, said Beverly Komarek, executive director of the historical society.

Man captured after pursuit

An Ellinwood man was able to temporarily elude law enforcement officers after a motorcycle pursuit Wednesday evening in Barton County. At one point in the pursuit, suspect Nicholas Curtice, 29, laid the Honda motorcycle over and a female passenger rolled away from it, but refused medical treatment and was released at the scene.

Pioneer Day

Third graders from Great Bend's public schools got a glimpse of Kansas history on Wednesday when they traveled to the Barton County Historical Museum and Village for Pioneer Day. Barton County Historical Society members, some dressed in old-time apparel, guided 241 students from Jefferson, Lincoln, Eisenhower, Park and Riley elementary schools through nine stations.

State school board member decries ‘War on Public Education’

State Board of Education member Sally Cauble thought it was an April Fool's joke when Deputy Commissioner Dale Dennis asked her to explain the purpose of postcards published by the board to "inform legislators and celebrate public education in Kansas." Dennis, who is in the Kansas Board of Education's Division of Fiscal and Administrative Services, also wanted to know what the budget was for these items, and he wanted to make sure they weren't in violation of the law that prohibits state officers from lobbying in the state. He wasn't kidding.

Crisis City: GBFD sends 10 firefighters

SALINA - The training is intense at Crisis City, a hands-on All Hazards Emergency Response Training Center west of Salina. Great Bend Fire Department sent five firefighters for training on Tuesday, and five more on Wednesday, Capt. Travis Parmley said.
