Case closed on Pawnee Rock fire

PAWNEE ROCK - The cause of a fire that destroyed a trailer house at 408 Cunife St. last Friday night has been ruled "undetermined," Pawnee Rock Volunteer Fire Chief Dustin Chambers said Monday.

Boley receives Kiwanis' Great Bend Greater Award

It took a fellow musician to surprise Joe Boley when the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis presented the 2012 Great Bend Greater Award last Wednesday at Montana Mike's. The club's award to an outstanding citizen doesn't necessarily go to a fellow Kiwanian, but Boley has been a member since March 6, 1997. As club secretary, he thought he knew who the award was going to.

Great Bend Regional Hospital gained 15 beds Thursday afternoon, after volunteers set up a portable "field hospital" on a north parking lot. It will be needed today when a couple of dozen injuries are recorded for a training exercise.

State school board member decries ‘War on Public Education’

State Board of Education member Sally Cauble thought it was an April Fool's joke when Deputy Commissioner Dale Dennis asked her to explain the purpose of postcards published by the board to "inform legislators and celebrate public education in Kansas." Dennis, who is in the Kansas Board of Education's Division of Fiscal and Administrative Services, also wanted to know what the budget was for these items, and he wanted to make sure they weren't in violation of the law that prohibits state officers from lobbying in the state. He wasn't kidding.
