Stolen trailer ditched after citizen follows thieves

CLAFLIN - A rural Barton County man who was on his way to work saw a suspicious pickup leaving the Claflin Lumber Yard around 6 a.m. Monday and decided he would follow. As a result, a stolen solar panel and a stolen trailer were recovered, according to Barton County Undersheriff Bruce Green.

​Christmas Bird Count Monday Dec. 29

The Cheyenne Bottoms Christmas Bird Count originally scheduled for Dec. 18 will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. Lunch will be available for participants courtesy of the KWEC and Nature Conservancy.

Zoo gets new bearcat

Great Bend's Brit Spaugh Zoo has a new animal - a 2-month-old binturong (BIN-tu-rong), commonly known as a bearcat. Zoo Director Scott Gregory said she will be kept in quarantine for about four weeks, which is the policy for any new animal. After that, she will become an education animal, which means she'll be able to travel with zoo staff for community programs.

Starting Monday, Dec. 22, the Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St., will begin lending portable WiFi Hotspot devices to library patrons wishing to expand the library's Internet access. Wifi Hotspot lending will be part of a pilot project initiated by the State Library of Kansas, in partnership with New York Public Library and the Knight Foundation.

Icy, snowy roads cause injury accidents

A mixture of snow and sleet began falling in Barton County Wednesday evening, which led to a number of weather-related accidents. Kansas Highway Patrol responded to two injury accidents in Barton County and one in Ellsworth County, all between 7:28 and 10:22 a.m. on Thursday.
