'Sings' concert offers two days of gospel music

Capt. Eric Yoder thinks his work clothes could make a pretty good Halloween costume. Dressed in full fire fighting gear, including mask and breathing equipment, he sounds like Darth Vader and may kind of look like him, too. But Yoder wanted kindergartners at Park Elementary School to see there's nothing to be afraid of. Yoder wants children to know that if they see a fireman reaching for them in a smoke-filled room, he's there to help.

Mobile Fire Safety Trailer visits schools

Firefighters will visit Great Bend schools Oct. 4-15, as they observe Fire Prevention Week. Capt. Luke McCormick at the Great Bend Fire Department said children will learn some important things about fire safety, and the lessons are also good for parents. The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign is, "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!"

Zoo news: Lone lemur headed home

A trio of lemurs at Great Bend's Brit Spaugh Zoo has dwindled to one, Zoo Director Scott Gregory said. The lone lemur will be returned to Tanganyika Wildlife Park, and the local zoo will work on upgrading the exhibit area before seeking more lemurs.

Suspects caught with plow

Two men were arrested Monday for alledgedly stealing a four-bottom John Deere plow worth up to $2,500 from rural Barton County. Detective Rick Popp at the Barton County Sheriff's Office said watchful neighbors called 911 after seeing the men load the plow into a pickup, around 2:19 p.m. at NW 150 Road and NW 30 Ave.
