BCC combats student loan fraud, defaults

Fraud and abuse of student financial aid is a rising nationwide epidemic, according to Myrna Perkins, Director of Financial Aid at Barton Community College. Her office has the challenge of spotting suspicious applications, as well as reducing the default rate on student loans.

Bank fail: Regulations make sense

With Dems and Republicans seemingly at a stalemate in Washington, D.C., it's encouraging to see a bipartisan effort being proposed by Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), along with Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Angus King (I-Maine), and for something the country really needs. They have proposed the "21st Century Glass-Steagall Act," restoring some provisions that were stripped from the Banking Act of 1933 back in 1999.

Who will kiss a farm animal?

People with some "loose change" are invited to place it in one of six jars at the Barton County Fair. The jars show the faces of members of the Fair Board, Fair Friends and 4-H. The one who gets the most money will kiss a farm animal.

New BCC trustee joins budget study

Leonard Bunselmeyer was sworn in Thursday as the newest member of the Barton Community College Board of Trustees. County Clerk Donna Zimmerman administered the oath of office for Bunselmeyer and re-elected trustees Don Learned and John Moshier at the beginning of a study session that included news about next year's budget.
