Science fiction author Ray Bradbury, who died this week at age 91, is best known for his book "Fahrenheit 451," a tale of a 24th-century dystopia where books are outlawed and the job of firefighters is to burn any copies that turn up. The title refers to the temperature at which paper will supposedly ignite.

Zoo News: Tuesday is Inspection Day

"June 12th could possibly be the most important day in zoo history!!" Brit Spaugh Zoo Director Scott Gregory said. He was speaking of the Great Bend zoo's history. Tuesday is the day the zoo will be inspected by staff from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for possible accreditation.

Spellebration

This week the 85th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee was held in the Maryland Ballroom of the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center south of Washington, D.C. All of the 278 contestants were "spellebrities" for the duration of the event, a scholastic Olympics of sorts.

Two Kansans advance in National Spelling Bee

Friends and family of Clara Wicoff cheered her on Wednesday during rounds two and three of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Iola student was the 2012 champion of the Great Bend Tribune's Sunflower Spelling Bee, making her one of three Kansans at the national bee that got under way Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

Iola student Clara Wicoff and her family will soon be flying to Washington, D.C., for the National Spelling Bee. Wicoff, who just completed the eighth grade, is the champion of the Great Bend Tribune's 2012 Sunflower Spelling Bee, held March 17 at Barton Community College.

BCC falls short on performance agreement

Failing to show enough improvement on certain goals for 2011 will cost Barton County Community College money, President Dr. Carl Heilman said. The exact amount is not yet known, but BCC will only receive 80 percent of its share of any "new money" allocated by the Kansas Legislature this year, because of its scores on the latest Kansas Board of Regents Performance Agreement.
