Nite Owls present gold star quilts

For their latest community service project, members of the Nite Owls Quilt Guild have made patriotic quilts in honor of U.S. military personnel from Kansas who lost their lives in 2011. These red, white and blue quilts are being presented to gold star families through American Legion posts, said guild member Joyce Burnham.

EXUBERANT: Iola’s Wicoff wins third Sunflower Spelling Bee

The winner of the Great Bend Tribune's 2012 Sunflower Spelling Bee is Clara Wicoff, an eighth grader from Iola. This is the third time for her to win the bee and advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Auditor praises BCC stewardship

Rec board buys new equipment, approves director's pay raise

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will purchase a field groomer and attachments for use at the Veterans Park fields. The GBRC board met on Monday and approved the specification and then the quote for a Toro Sand Pro 3040 from Professional Turf Products, a Wichita firm. The base bid was $11,284, which GBRC Executive Director Diann Henderson said was below the $12,000 that has been budgeted for this piece of equipment, with money coming from the capital outlay fund. However, with two attachments the total price approved Monday was $15,666.29.
