CHASE - Mara Ellen Gillespie, 24, died March 24 at her residence in Chase. Born Sept. 15, 1988 in Great Bend she was the daughter of Geneil Ellen Gillespie. In 2007, she graduated from Chase Rural High School. She graduated from Barton Community College with a CNA degree. A lifelong resident of Chase she was a CNA and CMA and a restaurant cook.
CLAFLIN - The governing body of the City of Claflin met in regular session, Monday, March 11, 2013 at 7:00 PM in the city building. Present were: Mayor Michael Urban, Councilpersons Kirk Schneweis, Kelly Nixon, Casey Hubbard and Leon Oberle. Also present: City Attorney Bob Suelter, City Clerk Patricia Schmidt, Robert Gunder, Richard Hayes, Liz Praeger, Randy Oeser and Ryan Oeser.
Two new local children's book authors, Gina Cook and Tami Dykes will hold their first book signing this Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Everything Under the Son which is located at 407 McKinley St. in Great Bend.
The Barton County Historical Society will be closed Saturday for Independence Day. Regular hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The Barton County Museum and Village is located just south of the Arkansas River Bridge in Great Bend on U.S. 281.

Following a 10-2 series-opening win over Dodge City Tuesday the Great Bend Chiefs gave up some big hits as the Rangers regrouped for an 11-5 victory in game two. LAS VEGAS, Nev.- Alexis Folkerts, Jadynce Schroeder, Jordyn Stukey and Cadence Brown competed at this year' s National meet in Las Vegas June 10-13.
