HOISINGTON -- Shirley Ann Harrison, 76, died July 30 at Southwind Hospice Home, Pratt, Kans. Born Aug. 20, 1935 at Pratt, Kans., she was the daughter of Frank A. and Anna (Springer) Kuhn. Shirley was a lifetime Hoisington resident, and graduated from Hoisington High School in 1953. She married William F. Harrison, and enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and friends.
HUTCHINSON -- Michael K. "Big Mike" Preston took to the heavenly highway on July 29. The self-proclaimed "King of the Road" was born on April 11, 1947 in Stafford, Kans., to Edgar T. and Monica [DeBusk] Preston. Mike's formative years were spent in Macksville, Kans., where his one-of-a-kind personality began to take shape. After graduating from Macksville High School in 1965, Mike volunteered to serve four years in the United States Air Force. In 1975 he enlisted in the United States Army, and served his country an additional four years.

LARNED -- Ryan Patrick McGinness, 32, died July 27, at Hays. Born Feb. 1, 1980 in Great Bend, he was the son of James J. Jr. and Sharon Elaine Lloyd May McGinness. A lifetime area resident he was a Rig Operator for Professional Pulling at Hays.He was of the Catholic faith.

The newest addition to our family, Boland Garet Baker, arrived mid-day on the 18th. He weighed in at just over 9 pounds and is 21 and ½ inches long. To say that his big sisters are thrilled with his arrival would be an understatement. His mom and dad, all the grandparents, aunts, and uncles are equally happy to welcome him into the family.
Dr. John Palsmeier, the son of Ted and Lillian Palsmeier of Conway Springs and the grandson of Betty Mae Axman of Olmitz, began working at NuScale Power in Corvallis, Ore. on October 13, as a nuclear probabilistic risk assessment analyst. NuScale is developing a new reactor design emphasizing significant advances in safety and John is part of the group which evaluates the ability of the reactor to withstand accidents which exceed design specifications.

A historic agreement was reached today as Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado conducted a special meeting of the Republican River Compact in Manhattan. Representatives of the states have signed a resolution, approving operational adjustments in 2014 and 2015 under the Republican River Compact, which will benefit water users throughout the basin and set the administration on a course to find long-term solutions to persistent problems.
