LARNED - Ruth I. Steffen, 78, died Feb. 1 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 11, 1933, in Ellinwood she was the daughter of Melvin Cornelius and Dora Flanders Kasselman. On March 30, 1952, she married Vern Steffen at Zook. He survives.
ALBERT - Betty Lou Goodman, 77, died Feb. 1 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Born Feb, 11, 1934, on the family farm in Albert, she was the daughter of John and Katie (Diehl) Moore. She was a retired baker and cook for Furr's.
GREAT BEND - Richard F. Pope passed away on Feb. 1. Born Nov. 4, 1934, he was the son of Lyman and Cora (Spicer) Pope. He was a resident of Great Bend, formerly of Newark Valley, N.Y. On June 23, 1956, he married Joan D. Robinson. She survives.

A stolen car was recovered this week, but Crime Stoppers would still like anyone with information to help officers solve the case, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said.
HOISINGTON -The Hoisington Ministerial Association is sponsoring its first annual soup tasting event, "Taste of Hoisington". All proceeds go to help the needy of the community with rent, utilities etc. It is this Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Hoisington Activity Center, 1200 Susank Road. They will serve from 11 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Cost is $6 for those 11 and up; children 10 and under free.

LA CROSSE - Mary A. Engel, 73, died July 20 at her home. Born Jan. 6, 1941 at Hays, she was the daughter of Joseph H. and Albina (Billinger) Orth.
Christopher James Thomas, 48, died July 20, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. Born June 8, 1966, in Junction City, he was the son of Timothy and Carol (Breault) Thomas. A lifetime resident of Great Bend and Hoisington, he was a self-employed computer repairman.
Gwen G. Schroeder, 72, died July 20, in Great Bend. Born Oct. 15, 1941, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of H. Martin and Bernice Lucille (Davis) Glenn. She was a graduate of Ellinwood Rural High School and Adela Hale School of Business. A resident of Great Bend since 2005, moving from Overland Park, she was retired. On Aug. 6, 1966, she married Arlen C. Schroeder in Kansas City.
Crime Stoppers is seeking information that could help stop the number of vehicular burglaries in Barton County.
Sheriff Brian Bellendir reports vandals opened the valves on three oil lease stock tanks in rural Barton County, causing the release of approximately 188 barrels of oil. The crime occurred sometime between 1 p.m. on Friday, July 18, and 8:25 a.m. on Saturday in the 800 block of SW 10 Road. Bellendir called the vandalism a "senseless act" and said loss is expected to exceed $12,000.
