SAN DIEGO - Padres slugger Carlos Quentin felt that getting hit by pitches by Zack Greinke during the 2008 and 2009 seasons was justification enough for rushing the mound and slamming into the pitcher - hard enough to break his left collarbone.

Sequester Cuts: Not In My Backyard!

Back in the winter, Republicans were perfectly happy to let the sequester happen. They hewed to their math-challenged belief that Washington could slash the budget deficit by taking an axe to entitlement programs, preserving or hiking defense spending, lowering tax rates, and foregoing any new revenue. And if the Obama administration refused to go that route, Republicans were fine to let the sequester kick in on March 1 - as mandated by the 2011 deal between the parties.

Historic bridge on commission agenda

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes the possible replacement of an historic stone bridge near Claflin, a National Public Safety Telecommunications Week proclamation, an emergency vehicle designation for Dove Chevrolet Buick Cadillac and new doors for the Health Department.

The First Congregational United Church of Christ has Fair Trade items at The Gallery, 2021 Forest Ave., Great Bend. For over 10 years the church has brought Fair Trade products to church bazaars, Christmas sales and for sale at the church. Supporting Fair Trade is helping people through the purchase of quality items by connecting the artisan to the public in a more direct manner.
