COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Muriel S. Machal, 91, died April 25, at Cheyenne Mountain Care Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Kinsley, she was the daughter of Ray and Ida (Robbins) Stewart. On April 3, 1957, she married Joseph Anthony Machal in Great Bend, He died on Dec. 21, 1992. A resident of Colorado Springs, Colo. for seven years, coming from Great Bend, she was an insurance and financial planner for L.C. Harmon Agency.
MAPLE HILL - Richard "Brian" Reed, 38, died April 18, 2015, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, Topeka. He was born June 1, 1976, at Great Bend, the son of Richard L. Reed and Mary Denise (Keenan) Carroll. He married Smo Ortiz April 7, 1995, at Lawrence. He was a boxing promoter matchmaker for Empire Sports Management and Promotion.
ELLINWOOD - Bernita K. (Urban) Schloemer-Clair, 83, passed away April 27, at the Ellinwood District Hospital. Services are pending with Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood.
Members of the Barton County Young Professionals group are invited to attend the luncheon program, "School Enrollment Options," on Tuesday, May 5, at Pizza Hut, 4101 10th St. There will be a panel of local K-12 education providers, from both public and private schools. The program is free to attend, but participants must pay for their meals. The presentation will run from 12:15 -12:45 p.m., with door prize drawings.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host "Water Conservation Rain Barrel" from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. This is a free Stop 'N' Learn session. Landscapes, on average, account for nearly 40 percent of a household's water usage during the summer months. Rain barrels can help alleviate some of the pressure on water resources by collecting rain water to be used for watering purposes.

Great Bend will be hosting the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) softball and baseball tournament for the second year from April 29 through May 3, 2015. The City of Great Bend and the Great Bend Recreation Commission have worked hard to help host this championship baseball and softball tournament at the Great Bend Sports Complex.
A vehicle driven by Elias Garza was southbound in the 2000 block of Harrison St. at 9:05 p.m. Sunday and rear-ended a vehicle driven by Kenneth Gray, who reportedly had slammed on his brakes. Both vehicles fled the scene, according to the Great Bend Police Department.

CLEVELAND- Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez is dropping his appeal of a five-game suspension and will begin serving the suspension Monday.
CHICAGO- The White Sox completed an unofficial sweep of the Royals on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field with a 5-3 victory in the regularly scheduled contest. The White Sox also won the suspended game from Friday by a 3-2 margin, when Avisail Garcia delivered a walk-off single against Kelvin Herrera to score Melky Cabrera. The teams only needed to play the ninth to complete that game.
