PONCA CITY, Okla. - Beryl V. Drumm, 87, died Feb. 22 in Ponca City, Okla. Born Dec. 6, 1924, in Longford, he was the son of Frank and Esther (Russell) Drumm. In 1942 he graduated from Longford High School and in 1952 from Kansas State University. On April 15, 1949, he married Ida Elizabeth Stetler. He coached and taught in Alton, Alta Vista, Cedar Point, Sabetha, and Bushton before retiring in 1988. In 2007, he moved to Ponca City, Okla.

HOISINGTON - Anna Rose Urban, 84, died Oct. 28, at Russell Regional Hospital. Born July 3, 1930, in Claflin, she was the daughter of Frank and Anna (Hoffman) Tinkel. On May 2, 1951, she married Julius J. Urban in Dubuque. He died on Oct. 27, 2003. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was the janitorial manage at the Hoisington Veterinary Hospital for many years.

Coaching basketball at a community college means a lot of new faces nearly every year. Barton Community College men's coach Craig Fletchall knows this. He had been at it for 13 years – eight at Barton where he is the all-time leader in coaching wins.
Five set matches have not been kind to the Barton Community College volleyball team this season. Tuesday night in Colby the Cougars played a 5-set match for the ninth time this season. For the seventh time, Barton lost that fifth and deciding set.
Great Bend middle school wrestlers started their season with practice Tuesday. Thirty one athletes participated in the first practice in the new middle school wrestling room.
